As an athlete I've trained for marathons, triathlons and adventure runs for twelve years and counting. By participating in these events I have drawn parallels from running that contribute to achieving successful business goals.
We live in an age of instant gratification. Click a button and your shopping is delivered to your doorstep. Transportation options are an app away almost eliminating physical effort. The variety of photo, video and message streaming capabilities have made connecting with loved ones around the world - instantaneous - without leaving your chair.
With these efficiencies at our fingertips there are many things technology cannot do. When it comes to physically running a marathon or instantly starting a successful business, there's no app for that.
Similar to running, the two steps I propose are simple and when repeated over and over again in evermore refined applications, will carry you to your goals.
Setting Goals
Running: Athletes first commit to a race by registering for the race and marking it on their calendars. They are committed. Once the race day is set it is important to create small training goals in the weeks and months leading up to the event.
Business: Set your deadlines for your most important projects. Set launch dates and mark them on your calendars. Break down the large goal into small daily ones for yourself and your team. Track your progress each week. Stick with the plan.
Keeping Up the Pace
Running: No matter what sport you are training for it is important to obtain the proper gear. For running, it starts with getting a proper pair of running shoes. Surprisingly, you may find you need help getting the proper gear. If you need help deciding which shoes are best for you, or which clothes to buy for the race conditions, be sure to visit the experts at your local running shop.
Business: Ask questions. Research your industry, take a class or find mentors in your field to help you grow your area of expertise. Outline a weekly regimen that allows you time to update your goals. Similar to building muscles on your body, acknowledge that it will take time to set that foundation for your business to be successful.
Strong Finish
You have completed your training and are ready for race day or your presentation or your product launch. Whether you've entered your first race or your 50th you can confident that you prepared well for each event. There is no better feeling than crossing that finish line or meeting that business goal and knowing that you tried your best.
Now...celebrate your achievement!
What goal will you choose to take on next?
